CASA MESA, US FIRST Robotics Team 2261

Chris Arellano

1) Why did you choose CASA as a place to mentor for FRC?

I chose CASA as a place to mentor for FRC because I think it is a great place to work with young students who are interested in learning how to build a robot. This is my first experience in building such a robot so I am very excited to learn as well as apply my engineering skills. Building this type of robot takes great team work in which students and mentors learn to work together through team building and communication.

2) Did you have somebody in your educational world that helped you decide your career?

I would not say that there is only one person but many people who have directly or indirectly played a role in helping me decide which career I wanted to pursue. I have always been interested in learning how things work, so that’s why I decided to pursue a mechanical engineering degree. Along the way, I became very interested in learning about human and  animal movement. Now, I am lucky enough to be pursuing a doctorate degree in Biomechanics at CU Boulder.

3) What motivates you as an individual to come and mentor future engineers while working full time?

My motivation comes from the students themselves. When I see these young students eager to learn and work hard, I see a part of myself when I was young. I understand how important it is for young students to be involved in activities that constantly challenge them on an intellectual level and have people around them to support their efforts. These students have the potential to be the future scientist and engineers and I want to help them achieve their life aspirations.

4) Tell us about yourself. Title of your job, location and how long, hobbies and etc.

I am a graduate student at CU Boulder. My research focuses on understanding the biomechanical basis for the metabolic cost of human locomotion. My hobbies includes exercising (such as weight training and running), playing basketball, and reading books.
