CASA MESA, US FIRST Robotics Team 2261

Alex Vazquez

1) Why did you choose CASA as a place to mentor for FRC?

This is my third year being a mentor at Casa de la Esperanza. It is very rewarding to see the students grow from year to year in their technical abilities, and to hear about their college plans.

2) Did you have somebody in your educational world that helped you decide your career?

Isaac Newton said, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” I specially stood on the shoulders of my wife and parents.

Growing up I wanted to be a Defense Lawyer. Switching to an Engineering career was easy because it was love at first sight. I said “forget law school” when I first learned to program an Apple IIe computer in BASIC.

3) What motivates you as an individual to come and mentor future engineers while working full time?

We need more Hispanic Engineers and Scientists. It is a crisis! I am committed to helping the program that Casa de la Esperanza and MESA are supporting (Casa MESA) because it directly helps improve the Longmont Hispanic community.

4) Tell us about yourself. Title of your job, location and how long, hobbies and etc.

Love my wife and lucky to be the dad of 3 boys. My wife says she has 4 boys. IT Architect at IBM in Boulder, and have worked for IBM for 10 years. I enjoy working on auto mechanics, never afraid to take anything apart. I’ve own a 1949 Willys for 20 years, but also enjoy working on the late model cars. My wife gives me more credit on my woodworking skills that I deserve, but my only claim is that I can create lots of saw dust and damage perfectly good pieces of wood. My woodshop is La Termita (The Termite). The occasional piece of furniture or toy has made it out of the woodshop. I have a lot of tools. To quote Tim Allen “I even have tools to fix other tools.” From time to time I torture my family by making noise on the guitar and singing off key. True story, not being modest! Favorite author/singer is José Alfredo Jiménez.
